Benny Joines Obituary

Benny (Ben) Allen Joines, 91, of Hindsboro, Illinois, passed away on June 6, 2024. Born on October 2, 1932, in Red Boiling Springs, Tennessee, he was the son of Jack O. Joines and Anna Laura (Parkes) Joines.

A proud veteran of the Korean War, Ben enlisted in the United States Navy's Naval Air Corps in 1951, serving as an aircraft mechanic. His dedication and bravery earned him the National Defense Service Medal for his participation in search and rescue missions, and the Good Conduct Medal upon his honorable discharge in 1955.

Ben pursued engineering studies at the University of Illinois and remained a devoted Illini fan throughout his life. He was employed at Ryan Aircraft Corporation in San Diego, California, and returned to the family farm in Illinois in 1963. As a timber buyer of fifty years, he was known as the most honest logger in several counties. With a gift for making friends everywhere he went, his humor and quick wit were a daily fixture at the local coffee shop where he spent many mornings. Ben enjoyed fishing, reading military history, visiting the casino, and listening to country and gospel music. His family and friends will always cherish the times spent playing multiple hands of Rook or Euchre and laughing at his adventurous tales.

Ben was preceded in death by his parents, brother Bill, nephews, daughter-in-law, and grandson. He is survived by; his loving partner of 35 years, Jo Callaway; sons David Joines of Charleston, Illinois, and Dennis (Lugene) Joines of Paris, Illinois; stepchildren Shelly Plummer of Arcola, Illinois, Ryan Brewer of Alton, Illinois, and Adam Callaway of Paris, Illinois; former wife and lifelong friend Sandra Joines of Charleston, Illinois; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; brother Bob (Areta) Joines of Newman, Illinois; sisters-in-law Janice Thompson of Tuscola, Illinois, Sharon Joines of Newman, Illinois, nieces, and nephews.

Family and friends are welcome to participate in a celebration of Ben's life at the farm of his dear friends, Bob and Pacie Trimble (540 North Co. Road 1900 East, Hindsboro, IL), on Saturday, June 15, from 1-5 pm. A private military burial will follow on Monday, June 17.

In place of flowers, the family suggests charitable memorial contributions be made in Ben's memory to DAV (Disabled American Veterans) Charitable Service Trust or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.  Cards are welcome.
