Carroll W. Payton

Carroll W. Payton, 85, of Newman passed away on Monday, July 15, 2024 at Pleasant Meadows Senior Living in Chrisman, IL.

Carroll was born to John and Marcelia (Turpen) Payton on December 21, 1938 in Newman.

He is survived by two siblings, Terry Payton and Jeannette (Don) Edwards; three nieces, Lisa, Vicki, and Penny; two nephews, Brent and Todd; and numerous great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Marcelia Payton; one sister, Ruth Blaney; two brothers, Larry and Eddie Payton; and two nephews.

Throughout high school Carroll played basketball, football, and ran track.  When he wasn’t busy with sports he was showing cattle.  Carroll truly enjoyed showing cattle and was very passionate about it. After graduating from Newman High School in 1957, he turned that passion into a career and began traveling around the country showing cattle. He excelled at what he did and attracted the attention of people like Johnny Cash, Kenny Rogers, and The Oak Ridge Boys and began showing cattle for them.

Carroll also enjoyed watching any sporting event that was on TV and watching the RFD channel.

The family would like to give a special thank you to the staff at Pleasant Meadows Senior Living and SBL Hospice for their support and care they gave to Carroll.

A visitation will be held from 10 – 11 a.m. on Friday, July 19, 2024 at the Joines Funeral Home in Newman with the funeral service beginning at 11 a.m.; Ted Shearer will be officiating. Burial will follow at the Newman Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Newman Fire Department.
