Doris J. Stone, 88, of Hume passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 10, 2025 at her home.
Doris was born on April 25, 1937 in Hume to Charles and Clella (Wade) Barrett. She married Harold Stone on September 17, 1955 in Hume. He preceded her in death in 2010.
She is survived by her children, Phyllis Stone of Hume, Randy Stone of Hume, Brenda (Marty) Jones of Paris, and Janet (Tim) Vandivier of Scotland; grandchildren, Casey (Jami) Jones, Cager (Jessie) Stone, Justin (Lindsey) Stone, Tiffany Sallee, Travis (Maria) Stone, Jamie (TJ) Prater, and Jennifer (Dakota) Cusick; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters, Luella Knight of Bloomington and Rose Smith of Neoga; and a brother, Fred Barrett of Hume.
Doris graduated from Young America High School in 1955 in Metcalf. After raising her four children she went to work for First National Bank of Chrisman, Longview Capital Corporation, and IDOT. Doris was a devout Catholic and a lifelong member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Hume. She served on the Shiloh Township Board as a clerk and then a trustee, was an active Edgar County Democrat and served as county chairman.
Some of Doris’s favorite pastimes were watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren participate in various activities, following Chicago Cubs baseball, and University of Illinois men's basketball. She also enjoyed traveling with her sisters and spending time sitting on her deck with her best friend, her dog Annie
A visitation will be held from 10 am – 12 pm on Monday, December 15, 2025 with a funeral mass beginning at 12 pm at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Hume. Burial will follow at Young America Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Edgar County Animal Shelter or St. Michael's Church to help restore the church bell.
