Freddie (Fred) Lee Blackburn, 83, of Paris, Illinois, passed away on February 6, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones. Born on May 26, 1941 in Winchester, Illinois, Fred lived a life full of laughter and love.
Fred’s greatest joy came from his family. He is survived by his eight children: Lori Blackburn, Leigh Anne Bedwell, Tad Blackburn, Jay Blackburn, Amy Donegan, Kasey Blackburn, Mandy Blackburn, and Eva Blackburn. His legacy lives on through his 16 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren, all of whom he adored deeply. He was also blessed with the love of his long-term partner, Deborah Wamsley.
Fred is also survived by his two sisters, Donna Roberts and JoEllen Cherry, who shared in his laughter and memories throughout his life.
Fred had an infectious spirit, always quick with a joke and a hearty laugh. His wit, humor, and kindness made him a friend to all who crossed his path. As a college football player himself and an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and Fighting Illini, he brought enthusiasm and joy to his hobbies and passions, always eager to share in the fun of sports and camaraderie.
A proud veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Fred also led a varied and fulfilling career, working in many different fields throughout his life. From farming in his early years to owning the Village Ice Cream Shoppe in Villa Grove, Fred was always up for new challenges. His entrepreneurial spirit and hardworking nature were key parts of his character.
Music was the heartbeat of Fred’s soul and he spent decades as a musician in bands such as J.T.S., Sounder, and Sister Kate. Whether playing an instrument, singing, or enjoying the rhythms of others, Fred’s passion for music never wavered. He carried this love with him in all aspects of his life, making lasting memories with those around him.
Fred’s impact on the world is immeasurable—through his work, his friendships, and most of all, his incredible family. His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy, and he will be forever remembered for the love, laughter, and light he brought into their lives.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Virginia and Lloyd Blackburn, whose love and guidance shaped the man he became. Fred is now reunited with those who have gone before him, but his memory will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who knew him. He was truly one of a kind, and his legacy will live on through his family and the countless lives he touched.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 15, 2025 at Joines Funeral Home in Villa Grove with a visitation being held two hours prior (11 a.m. – 1 p.m.). Following the services, the family will be going to JR’s Lounge in Villa Grove to continue to celebrate Fred’s life; all are welcome. Memorials can be made to the Leukemia Research Foundation.
Rest in peace, Fred—you will be missed more than words can express.
