John Smothers, 81, of Hume passed away peacefully on August 28, 2022 at Horizon Health in Paris, IL from a heart attack.
John was born on January 7, 1941 in Marion, IL. He is the son of Ethel and Hiram Smothers. He was one of 10 children. John married Ellen Louise Harden on June 14, 1963 in Dundee, IL. John was a coal miner at the Zeigler Coal Mine in Murdock. His love of woodworking and making crafts was his favorite past time, but most of all it was spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Ellen Smothers; one daughter, Julie (Dennis) Cary of Brocton; two grandchildren, Austin (Kelsey) Blair of Urbana and Tressica (Logan) Jeffers from Broadlands; three great-grandchildren, Aiden, Weston, and Emma; one brothers, Kenny (Elleanor) Smothers of Newman; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hiram and Ethel Smothers; four brothers, Gilbert, Claud, Carl, and Jack; four sisters, Nancy, Edna, Ruby, and Irene; and his favorite dog, Lucky.
A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. on Friday, September 2, 2022 at the Joines Funeral Home (Newman). A graveside service will immediately follow at the Fairfield Cemetery where he will be laid to rest next to his brothers Claud and Carl. Pastor Justin Smith will be officiating. The family would like to invite everyone at the service to the Hume Municipal Building for lunch.
