Larry Kent Hill, father to Angela (Donald) Ruwe and Pamela (Darrin) Tate, passed away in his home on March 22, 2025, less than a month after losing his beloved wife, Nancy, of 66 years. He was 86 years old. Larry was born and raised near Allerton, Illinois, and was the son of Loran Hill and Nina Kurts. Following his graduation from Allerton High School in 1956, he proudly served in the United States Navy, aboard the USS Rupertus and the USS St Paul.
Larry and Nancy (Roller) were married on September 21, 1958, at Fairfield Chapel in Newman, Illinois, and lived briefly in Newman before moving to Sidell, where they farmed side by side until their retirement in 2003.
Larry found joy in the simple rhythms of life—watching the sun rise over his fields, tending to his crops, and working alongside Nancy, his partner in all things. Together, they built a life rooted in love, hard work, and quiet contentment. His greatest happiness came from the life he and Nancy created together, and it is a comfort to those who loved him that they are together again.
Larry is survived by his daughters Angela and Pamela, son-in-law’s, Don and Darrin, nine grandchildren, Ashley (Trenton), Hannah (Robert), Amanda (Josh), Aubrey (Jacob), Cecilia (Jacob), Allison (Travis), Zachary, Loran, and Grace. He was known as Papa G to 10 great-grandchildren (Esther, Hunter, Theo, Piper, Joanna, Malakai, Ellie, Asher, Oliver, and Karlie Jo). Larry is also survived by his sister, Karen Taylor Dohme of Benton, Illinois.
In addition to his wife, Nancy, he was preceded in death by his parents, a granddaughter, Sophia Lynn Ruwe, and his brother-in-law, Don Taylor. He was a member of the Allerton United Methodist Church.
Visitation will be on Friday, March 28, from 9 until 11 am at Joines Funeral Home, Newman, with funeral at 11. Burial will follow at Fairfield Church and Cemetery, Newman. Memorials may be made to the Hawk’s Nest, which supports Heritage High School students with food, hygiene, and school supplies.
