Robert Wayne Greger, 90, of Villa Grove, passed away on September 20, 2024 at Carle Hospital. Visitation will be held from 11 – 12 p.m. Saturday Sept. 28th at Joines Funeral Home, Villa Grove. Funeral services will be immediately following. Burial will be in Centennial Cemetery, Villa Grove, IL. Memorials can be made to Ronald McDonald House or Easterseals.
Bob Greger, affectionately known as "Bobcat," passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, humor, and love. Born on February 5, 1934, in Peoria, Illinois, to Chet and Juanita (Fancher) Greger, Bob lived a life dedicated to his family and community. He worked for the Union Pacific for 42 years.
Bob will be fondly remembered for his generous heart and unwavering support for those around him. He had a unique talent for uncovering hidden treasures at garage sales and flea markets, often purchasing items with specific friends and family in mind, embodying his belief that "you never know who might need it." His passion for these outings stemmed from his desire to bring joy to others, a trait that inspired all who knew him.
A devoted family man, Bob was married to his late wife, Kay Greger, and together they created a loving home. Bob dug a pool by hand to provide a gathering place for family and friends, hosting memorable events, including a famous Hawaiian Luau in 1989. His family was his world, and he took great pride in supporting his seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, often attending their sporting events and sharing their achievements at the local coffee shop.
Bob instilled the values of humility, kindness, and standing up for what is right in his daughters, Angie (Steve) Trame and Tammy (Doug) Wallen. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Tyler (Tarissa) Nohren, Matt (Andrea) Nohren, Erica (Brad) Schwerman, Lexi (Billy) Bair, Dougie Wallen, Andrew, and Allie Trame, along with great-grandchildren Jack, Easton, Graham, Hazel, Dawson Nohren, and Henry Bair. He is also survived by his brothers Don, Gary, and Danny Greger, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his family devotion, Bob was an accomplished athlete, known for his exceptional high jumping ability. He qualified for the 1958 Melbourne Olympic Tryouts in Bakersfield, California, achieving an unofficial jump of 6' 11 3⁄4" while in street clothes—just north of the gold medalists jump that year. Known for his love of a good cheap cigar, he humorously promised he never inhaled.
Bob was preceded in death by his beloved wife Kay, his parents, and his brothers John, Jim, and Larry, as well as his sister Sharon Lowery.
He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. A celebration of Bob's life will be held on Sept. 28 in Villa Grove where friends and family can gather to share their cherished memories.
